Children's Dentistry

  • Only your child dentist has the skills, training and expertise to give a comprehensive diagnosis about your child's oral health condition, and to advise you on appropriate treatment and care. Your children's dentist can help you establish a routine of daily cleaning and preventive visits to keep your children's oral health good for life.

Taking proper care of your children's teeth and gums is a lifelong commitment. It includes a good oral hygiene routine that you follow at home, as well as regular visits to your children's dentist and an overall "team" approach to your oral care. By taking these simple steps, there's every reason why you should keep your "oral health - good for life."

As a parent, you have a big role to play in keeping your child's teeth healthy and clean. You can help prevent cavities. Prevention starts at home, with good eating habits and daily cleaning of the teeth.

Ideally your child should see a pediatric dentist at 12-18 months old, or as soon as the front teeth erupt. This will allow the pediatric dentist to identify any dietary or dental problems very early on, and to establish a ‘dental home’ where both you and your child will feel comfortable and where you know you can always turn to if problem comes. An early intervention can help prevent more complex procedure later on.

An early visit to the pediatric dentist is a good way to learn proper oral hygiene at an early age, including avoiding night-time bottles or cups of formula or juice, proper tooth brushing, and a diet that promotes good dental health.

Finally dental trauma is common in children between 2-4 years old as this is the time they start to walk and have no fear. If your child is more familiar with the dental environment, then should he or she need to make an emergency dental visit, they are less likely to be anxious or frightened.

Why Are The Primary Teeth Important?

It is very important to maintain the health of the primary teeth. Neglected cavities can and frequently do lead to problems which affect developing permanent teeth. Primary teeth, or baby teeth are important for (1) proper chewing and eating, (2) providing space for the permanent teeth and guiding them into the correct position, and (3) permitting normal development of the jaw bones and muscles. Primary teeth also affect the development of speech and add to an attractive appearance. While the front 4 teeth last until 6-7 years of age, the back teeth (cuspids and molars) aren’t replaced until age 10-13.

    Temporary? Permanent?

As early as 4 months, the first primary (or baby) teeth to erupt through the gums are the lower central incisors, followed closely by the upper central incisors. Although all 20 primary teeth usually appear by age 3, the pace and order of their eruption varies.

Permanent teeth begin appearing around age 6, starting with the first molars and lower central incisors. At the age of 8, you can generally expect the bottom 4 primary teeth (lower central and lateral incisors) and the top 4 primary teeth (upper central and lateral incisors) to be gone and permanent teeth to have taken their place. There is about a one to two year break from ages 8-10 and then the rest of the permanent teeth will start to come in. This process continues until approximately age 21.

Adults have 28 permanent teeth, or up to 32 including the third molars (or wisdom teeth).

Fissure sealants are white, plastic coatings that are painted onto the biting surface of the back teeth. These biting surfaces are criss‐crossed with tiny hills (pits) and valleys (fissures), which provide a perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

Even though most people think of pre-teens and teens when they think of orthodontics, there are good reasons your child should get an orthodontic evaluation much sooner. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7.

Good dental care begins before a baby's first tooth appears. Just because you can't see the teeth doesn't mean they aren't there. Teeth actually begin to form in the second trimester of pregnancy. At birth, your baby has 20 primary teeth, some of which are fully developed in the jaw.
